FAIRY GODMOTHERS, MAGIC DUST, AND A BOTTLE OF DAWN. . . .

Have you ever wanted to be someone’s fairy godmother, wanted to be able to wave your magic
wand and see sparkles surround a life and leave renewal in its wake?  One of the most rewarding
aspects of working with rescue dogs is being a part of and witnessing the amazing
transformation that takes place when a neglected little dog is shown love and care, often for
the first time in their lives.

This page is devoted to a little boy named Andy, initially Raggedy Andy, who came into our care
much in need of a fairy godmother with an endless supply of magic dust!  Although Diane didn’t
have a magic wand, she had a heart full of love and the determination to uncover the little prince
under tons of mats, burrs, fleas, and infected skin.

Andy was found living in a backyard under an old car.  Other larger dogs in the yard intimidated
him and prevented him from playing in the sun; life was spent in the shadow of grease and rust.
Andy’s first magic godparent watched from a distance until he could stand it no more and
rescued Andy from his dungeon, turning him over to godmother #2, Diane.

As you can see from the photos of Andy’s first day in rescue, much work was needed.  A total of
9 hours were spent the first day, painstakingly shaving off mats that were causing ulcers on the
skin underneath.  Burrs had been embedded in  Andy's fur for so long they had worked into his
skin and had to be removed.  Most of his hair had to be carefully shaved to the skin.

Andy’s ears were so neglected that the hair had become saturated with wax and matted in balls
inside his ears, obstructing his ability to hear.

After a Capstar and Revolution for fleas, 9 hours of meticulous shaving and nearly a half bottle
of Dawn detergent, our little prince was beginning to emerge.  This is Andy following his first
spa day!

The following photos illustrate Andy’s progress towards leaving behind a life of “cinders” and
becoming our “Mr. Cinderella”.  Is he not becoming a beautiful boy?  He is now continuing his
journey to healing under the care of his third fairy godmother and father – his new forever
parents, John and Anita Waldeck!  What a lucky little guy – not 1 but 4 godparents in his life!

So many times in Rescue, we hear the stories of the horrible medical conditions dogs come with.
Many potential fairy godmothers/godfathers (a.k.a. foster parents) are frightened away from
volunteering because they think they could not provide the needed medical care.  A large part of
rescue and fostering is the kind of care you see here.  Take a look at Andy and consider becoming
a beloved godmother or godfather, armed with your own magic wand (lots and lots of love and a
few bottles of shampoo).  As you work your magic, the little soul you are helping is empowered to
begin the healing process and find his potential in life.  No reward could be greater than being a
part of a story like Andy’s.

Keep checking back as Andy's new family has promised to send us more photos as his fairy tale
continues to improve.
